A popular item has been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration due to a Salmonella scare.
New York-based Satur Farms announced that it is voluntarily recalling Baby Spinach and Mesclun salad mix because they may be contaminated with salmonella. The product was distributed in New York and Florida through various retailers.
According to the FDA, the voluntary recall was initiated following routine sampling by the Florida Department of Agriculture and New York State Department of Agriculture and markets.
The recalled items include retail products packed in plastic clamshell containers with Satur Farms brand name in five, 10 and 16-ounce packages, as well as food service products packed in sealed poly bags that include:
- 2-1/2 lbs, 3#, 4#, 4 x 2.5#, 4 x 3#
- Spinach Lot #18494
- Spinach Lot #18513
- Mesclun Lot #18520
The recall has also impacted prepared food items at Whole Foods and other supermarkets.
Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts four to seven days.
Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.
"Consumers who have purchase Satur Farms products with these lot numbers are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Satur Farms requests all consignees (wholesalers and retailers) to hold and discontinue selling their existing stock of this product."
